Coaches are not therapists, but they carry, session after session, something that is rarely called: the burden of the client's condition . Research in the field shows that most of the people you work with have experienced some form of trauma, and this can influence their ability to make decisions, support change, and move forward. No matter what niche you practice in.
Your role is not to heal the trauma. It is to know how to create a safe space, ask permission before exploring, recognize when the client is activated, recognize the limits of your role and professional competence, and know exactly when it is time for a referral to a specialist.
This is, in essence, trauma-informed coaching : a professional approach informed by the impact of trauma, which is learned and practiced, not just read about.
But there is also the other side, less discussed: your own body is affected, session after session, by the tension and emotional intensity that you contain professionally.
Without a release mechanism, some of this tension can remain in the body after the session ends. Repeated and accumulated over time, this can lead to chronic fatigue, empathic exhaustion, burnout, or even vicarious trauma.
TRE® — Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises — is a somatic method developed by Dr. David Berceli, which facilitates the activation of the natural neurogenic tremor mechanism and the development of the capacity for self-regulation of this process.
Neurogenic tremor is a natural reflex of the body, through which the nervous system physiologically discharges accumulated tension.
There is no need for speech, recollection, changing beliefs, or cognitive analysis: the body does its job on its own, beyond the mind.
Within this program, TRE® is not presented as a treatment for trauma and does not replace psychotherapy, assessment, or medical intervention.
Within this introductory module, TRE® is explored primarily as a personal practice of self-regulation and professional development of the coach.
The module offers you a first experiential and technical contact with TRE®, structured around the ICF key coaching competencies:
Presence and personal self-regulation
Training the ability to remain anchored and available, including in the presence of the client's intense emotions.
Observing and understanding body language
Observing the client's body language, but also the signals of one's own body, as a source of information and centering, without hasty interpretations and without exceeding the limits of the professional role.
Containment and safety
How to build a framework that supports safety, autonomy, freedom of choice, and client peace.
Self-regulation and co-regulation
Essential principles in TRE® and concrete resources to recalibrate your nervous system before and after sessions and support your presence, orientation, and responsiveness during them.
Facilitating customer growth
Including body awareness in listening, reflection, and the process of change, so that understanding does not remain solely at the cognitive level.
Participating in this introductory module allows you to use TRE® as a personal practice and indirectly bring the effects of your own self-regulation, presence, and inner stability into your relationship with clients.
However, participation does not grant the right to teach or facilitate TRE® to others. In order to integrate the method into direct work with clients, it is necessary to continue the international training and certification program.
Participation in this module represents the first step and the condition for access to continuing the international training and certification program as a Certified TRE® Provider , within TRE® for All — TFA, USA.
